Martay Smith

Bio:
Martay Smith is the Director of Human Resources in the
Office of Information Technology. She has responsibility
for coordinating all hiring, workforce development,
promotion, retention and performance evaluation programs.
Martay also supports campus-wide workforce development
programs in the technology domain, including supporting
Duke's growing Diversity IT program, which has been in
place for the past 8 years and is a forum for networking
events, discussion groups, speakers and outreach events
with the mission to increase diversity in the IT
workforce at Duke. Related, Martay also serves as the
organizing lead for OIT's internship programs, which
target underrepresented minorities from NCCU, Durham
Tech, Wake Tech and other minority-serving institutions
into intern positions with OIT and within IT at Duke. In
recent years these internships have extended to Duke
female undergraduate students interested in tech careers,
including through the Duke DTech program and the national
Rewriting the Code program.
Prior to joining OIT, Martay worked in Duke's central HR
group as a recruiter and as a compensation analyst.
Before Duke, Martay was employed by Penn State Hershey
Medical Center as a recruiter, and The Hershey Company as
an HR Specialist. She holds a BA in Psychology from Kent
State and a MA in HR from St Francis University. Martay
has also earned her Senior Professional in Human
Resources (SPHR) Certification from the Human Resource
Certification Institute (HRCI) and her Senior Certified
Professional certification from the Society of Human
Resource Management (SCP-SHRM).
