General Description of the Job Class

Perform a variety of highly skilled duties associated with the operation of specialized equipment to assist physicians in the examination and treatment of diseases of the eye. Perform multiple ophthalmic imaging procedures including; digital and film fluorescein/ICG angiography (including performing IV injections and related patient care), color fundus photography, optical coherence tomography, retinal thickness analysis, anterior segment slit-lamp biomicroscopy, goniography, external and O.R. photography, public relations and teaching-based general photography and media support.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Using the abovementioned techniques and others not listed, the ophthalmic photographer will perform a variety of imaging tests in order to aid the physicians in documenting, tracking, and treating all forms of eye disease. The majority of duties involve intimate patient care, the rest of the work involves the processing of images via computer- based manipulation/handling as well as producing the bulk of teaching- related media in support of the faculty, residents and fellows.

Intimate patient care includes the imaging tests using the cameras and machines appropriate and also includes the assessment and monitoring of patients well-being before, during, and immediately after IV injections related to fluorescein and ICG angiography. Photographers are trained in all aspects of venipuncture and associated side effects and risks, and also trained to monitor vital signs and how to recognize and address rare but not uncommon complications. Assists with computer/networking back-up and maintenance/troubleshooting. Supply ordering, inventory, equipment maintenance. Expected to perform at higher than average quality levels, as judged by supervisor.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

Work requires considerable knowledge of standard photographic techniques, materials, processes, and equipment generally obtained through two years of postsecondary training in photography or medical/biomedical photography/communications and certification as a retinal photographer/angiographer through fundus photograph and OCT reading centers. (Acceptable reading centers include University of Wisconsin, Duke University OCT Reading Center, Digital Angiography Reading Center, New York and Digital OCT Reading Center at the Cleveland Clinic.)

Requires clinical trial certification. Certification as a certified phlebotomy technician is a plus. Must obtain Certified phlebotomy technician certification within 6 months of hire. Must obtain all current clinical trial certifications within 6 months of hire.

Experience

Work three years experience of photography experience to become proficient in performing a variety of complex medical or ophthalmic photography activities involving specialized photographic procedures such as stereo fundus photography, slit lamp and goniophotography, fluorescein and ICG angiography, optical coherence tomography, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
