General Description of the Job Class

This position is responsible for the multiple functions and deliverables in the areas of monthly internal reporting, quarterly and annual external reporting, and tax reporting for Duke University Health System (DUHS) entities. This position will work across all DUHS entities to provide comprehensive financial reporting, integrity of the DUHS general ledger, and support for other DUHS initiatives. In addition, this position will be responsible for leading system-wide projects as directed by the Corporate Controller/Chief Accounting Officer

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Direct and manage the corporate-level accounting and finance structure and policy decisions related to system initiatives

Special projects and quick-turnaround tasks as assigned directly by the VP and Corporate Controller

Ensure timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial, statistical, and debt compliance reporting for DUHS.

Prepare monthly GAAP indirect-method and direct method cash flow reports for DUHS

Oversee DUHS consolidation process and "top down" external audit

Direct and coordinate the preparation of the annual audited financial statements and footnotes; consult with appropriate DUHS and University personnel and external auditors to ensure compliance with general accepted accounting principles

Provide data and tax schedules/support and serve as the primary contact for the University tax department in the preparation and review of the 990s filed for DUHS

Maintain and update as necessary common financial and statistical reporting formats for all DUHS entities; follow-up with appropriate business unit finance personnel on a 'same-day' basis for answers to technical inquiries.

Establish and maintain internal financial controls used to maintain integrity of DUHS' chart of accounts

Identify financial statement risks and implement effective controls over financial reporting

Participate in departmental Policy and Procedure documentation initiatives

Possess and continuously develop strong application skills including, but not limited to, SAP and Hyperion, to allow and determine the most efficient data compilation methods across DUHS; collaborate and partner with University staff to continually improve accounting processes and reporting

Research financial reporting accounting issues and assist in adoption of new accounting standards

Provide liaison with DUHS senior financial management, University senior accounting and finance personnel, internal auditors, external auditors, credit rating agencies, and consultants regarding financial and statistical reporting.

Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops and sessions and reviewing professional publications

Direct departmental personnel functions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance management, transfers, promotions, corrective actions and vacations schedules.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business. Advanced degrees or credentials are desirable

Experience

Work requires 8 years of progressive accounting, financial management and/or financial auditing experience including knowledge of financial reporting in accordance with GAAP and FASB standards.

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

CPA preferred

Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)

Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) Standards

Generally Accepted Auditing Standards (GAAS)

Solid written and verbal communication skills and attention to detail

SAP and Oracle Hyperion working knowledge and skills
