Occupational Summary
This is a civilian position within the Duke University Police Department. The DUPD threat assessor will provide risk assessments of faculty, staff, students, and visitors affiliated with Duke University and Duke University Health System. The DUPD threat assessor/investigator will report to Threat Assessment Manager and will work collaboratively with partner units, including Student Affairs, Human Resources, and Health System Risk Management, etc.
Work Performed
Conduct independent, thorough and impartial investigations of reports of through development of an investigative plan to include interviews of victims, suspects, witnesses, and others.
Analyze and collect collateral interviews, documents, and other information relevant to violence assessments.
As a threat assessor, conduct timely and expedited violence risk assessments and provide opinions on violence risk using structured professional judgment tools.
Assist criminal investigators in threat cases involving violation of criminal law.
Implement effective interventions to mitigate risk and case management of assigned cases.
Provides victim/witness assistance services to reporting victims and concerned community members.
Collaborate with Duke University and Duke University Health System community members to provide and connect individuals to community resources.
Prepare comprehensive written report of information obtained during an investigation.
Review investigation and report with appropriate DUPD and University staff and assist with fear mitigation when appropriate. Assist in maintaining database related to Behavioral Threat Assessment cases.
Assure compliance with ethical standards, rules, regulations, and privacy requirements.
Participate in ongoing training on threat assessment, risk assessment, behavioral interventions, crisis intervention, fear management, and related material.
Monitor developments in law, policy, and practice related to behavioral threat assessments.
Complete other projects as assigned.
Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training
Work generally requires a Bachelors degree.
Experience
Work requires one year of experience investigating and assessing behavioral and threat cases, including conducting background investigations, open source investigations and personal interviews.
One year of experience in working with crisis situations.
Experience and/or demonstrated strong interest in violence prevention and threat assessment and management.
Working knowledge of threat assessment and threat management theory and practice and experience in assessment and management of cases involving potential violence.
A valid North Carolina Driver's License or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of start date.
Experience in the higher education environment a plus.
