Occupational Summary
Under the direction of School of Medicine Finance leadership, provides strategic guidance and oversight for financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and performance analysis across assigned academic departments, centers, institutes, and administrative units. This role supports multi-year planning and resource allocation, develops analytical models and reporting tools, and ensures that financial information is presented accurately and transparently to inform decision-making. The position partners closely with academic and administrative leaders to evaluate financial performance, assess risks and opportunities, and recommend strategies that support operational effectiveness and advance institutional priorities.
Work Performed
Financial Planning and Analysis
Lead development and management of annual and multi-year budgets, financial projections, and planning tools for assigned portfolios.
Conduct ongoing financial and operational analysis to evaluate performance against budget, trends, and strategic targets.
Identify key financial drivers, risks, and opportunities and provide recommendations to leadership.
Maintain and improve financial models and reporting dashboards to support decision-making and resource allocation.
Support business planning efforts for new programs, initiatives, and organizational changes.
Financial Reporting and Decision Support
Develop and deliver timely financial reports, executive summaries, and analytical insights for senior leadership.
Ensure financial data is accurate, consistent, and clearly interpreted across units.
Coordinate with central finance, research administration, and business intelligence teams to incorporate institutional data into planning and reporting processes.
Contribute to the design and implementation of improved reporting tools, financial systems, and standardized processes.
Leadership and Collaboration
Engage departmental and unit leaders to strengthen financial management practices and support operational goals.
Lead, mentor, and develop finance analysts and staff supporting planning, budgeting, and analysis functions.
Promote shared understanding of financial performance, assumptions, and constraints across units.
Foster a collaborative, service-oriented environment that advances the School's mission and fiscal sustainability.
Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training
Bachelor degree in business administration, accounting, finance or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Candidates with an MBA, CPA, or equivalent professional qualification (i.e., Certified Management Accountant, Chartered Accountant) preferred.
Experience
Seven years of experience in financial analysis, forecasting, and budgeting.
Experience with Duke University or other enterprise reporting systems (e.g., SAP, A40) to support financial and analytical reporting is preferred.
Financial experience in a complex academic medical center or higher education is preferred.
