Occupational Summary

Performs and coordinates work activities related to insurance and risk management for Duke University in the development, preparation, implementation and management of all risk management program initiatives, including the day-to-day operational requirements of the department.

Work Performed

Directs, coordinates, and manages all risk financing programs and monitors the programs selected for their ongoing application and effectiveness.

Identifies, collects and analyzes exposure information from Duke University (DU) and Duke University Health System (DUHS).

Manages data collection, completes insurance applications, gets quotes, analyzes need for coverage, communicates with insurance broker.

Recommends appropriate coverages and limits and negotiate with insurance companies (primary and excess) when necessary, directly or through insurance or reinsurance intermediaries.

Manage brokers, insurers and any third-party service providers to ensure quality of risk management services.

Performs a variety of duties associated with claims management, including gathering information and recommending settlements for complex property, general liability, and automobile claims, lawsuits or incidents involving DU and/or DUHS (non-clinical). Negotiates settlement of claims within authority.

Prepares loss analyses and loss funding recommendations based on historical loss data, trends and future expectations.

Assists the Director in the development of all risk control programs and monitors implementation and impact. Designs and conducts risk management trainings sessions for operational units as appropriate, as well as provides risk management assessment and consultation.

Performs risk analysis for procurement functions: reviewing contracts, revising insurance requirements templates, improving interface with procurement and other departments to streamline the process.

Reviews contracts for risk management implications and responds to departments, units, and schools with observations and recommendations.

Oversees implementation of strategic risk management initiatives as developed by and with the Director.

Participates and provides leadership and coordination on a variety of institutional committees as directed.

Supervises staff as assigned.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires excellent oral and written communication skills and analytical skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program. CPCU or ARM certification is highly desirable.

Experience

Work requires a minimum of 10 years of progressive risk management experience in higher education, or practical risk management experience in another industry in an organization with large and diverse risk profiles or equivalent insurance company or insurance broker experience. 3-5 years supervisory experience is desirable. Ability to work independently and handle competing demands while navigating a complex organization with a diverse population and decentralized culture.
